Value Chain Project: GREEN AND CIRCULAR WINE
Innovation, sustainability and circular economy for the Italian wine supply chain
Green and Circular Wine – Environmental and management aspects for the wine sector is a supply chain programme designed to support wine companies in addressing some of the main transformations currently affecting the sector: climate change, the depletion of natural resources, the need to improve the efficiency of production processes, and growing market attention towards more sustainable products and production models.
The project is based on the awareness that sustainability in wine production can no longer be addressed through isolated actions. It therefore brings together primary production, processing, research and promotion, creating a shared pathway in which the investments made by individual companies contribute to common objectives of sustainability, innovation and competitiveness.
A project addressing the new challenges of viticulture
The effects of climate change are requiring the wine sector to rethink agronomic practices, resource management and production processes. Green and Circular Wine was created to strengthen companies’ ability to respond to these changes while improving their environmental and economic sustainability and their capacity to meet evolving market demands.
The project therefore operates on several levels: from water saving and recovery to energy efficiency, from reducing impacts on air and soil to protecting biodiversity, as well as enhancing the value of plant residues and developing circular economy models. These measures are complemented by digitalisation, through tools for data collection and the smart use of information.
Research at the heart of the circular model
Green and Circular Wine includes an applied research component involving the entire supply chain. The objective is to move from sustainability that is merely declared to sustainability that is measurable, verifiable and documentable, while also enabling integration with existing certification standards in the wine sector.
Among other areas, the research focuses on carbon sequestration, carbon farming, biochar production and the application of the Life Cycle Assessment – LCA methodology.
A supply chain project, not a collection of isolated actions
The value of Green and Circular Wine lies precisely in the integration of the different stakeholders involved. Companies make their own investments, share experiences and best practices, and take part in data collection and research activities; the research organisation develops and tests the circular economy model; the Consorzio ItaliaDiVini&Sapori – IDVES, as project promoter and lead partner, coordinates the programme and ensures its connection with enhancement and promotional activities.
Overall, the programme provides for investments of approximately €46 million, excluding VAT, distributed across Veneto, Piedmont, Tuscany, Trentino and Emilia-Romagna.
